Getting started

Shard is an AI assistant that lives inside Roblox Studio. You chat with it, and it can read your scripts, edit them, create objects and run code in your place. This page takes you from install to your first answer.

1. Install Shard#

TODO (owner) add the install steps (Creator Store link, or the plugin file and “Install as Plugin”). The code does not say how Shard is distributed.

After install, Studio shows a Shard toolbar with two buttons:

  • Chat opens the Shard Chat window.
  • Settings opens the Shard Settings window.

Each button opens its window, and pressing it again closes it. Both windows dock on the left by default. You can drag them anywhere, like any Studio panel.

2. Sign in, create an account, or continue as a guest#

The first time you open Shard, the Chat window shows the sign-in screen.

Sign in with a username or an email#

  1. Pick Username or Email at the top of the form.
  2. Type your username (or email) and your password.
  3. Press the sign-in button. It shows “Signing in” while it works.

Create an account#

If no account exists for what you typed, Shard says so: “No account on file for that username. Press Create account to make one.” A Create account button appears under it. Press it to create the account with the details you already typed. You are signed in right away.

  • A username is 3 to 20 characters: letters, numbers and underscores.
  • If your password is too weak, Shard asks for a longer, stronger one.
  • If you signed up with an email, Shard may ask you to confirm it with the link it sent before you can sign in.
  • A network can only create a small number of accounts. If you see “This network has reached its account limit”, sign in to an account you already have.

Continue as a guest#

Press the guest button on the sign-in screen to use Shard without an account. TODO (owner) confirm the button’s exact label (there is no dump of the sign-in screen).

As a guest you can use every provider that takes your own API key. You can’t use Shard-hosted models, Codex or Claude Code, because those need a Shard account. To sign in later, open Settings → Account and press Log In.

3. Pick a provider and a model#

Open Settings → AI.

  1. Providers: pick where your AI comes from. See Providers and API keys for the full list.
  2. API Key: if the provider needs a key, paste it into the API Key box, then click outside the box. The box then says “Key saved!”. Next time it says “Key set!”.
  3. Models: pick a model. The list comes from Shard’s model catalog.
  4. Reasoning and Reasoning mode appear only when the model supports them. “Default” lets the provider decide.

Shard has no provider selected on a fresh install. Until you pick one, Settings shows “No provider set.” and the chat can’t send.

Your choice follows the chat you are in:

  • When New chat is open, your choice becomes the default for new chats.
  • When an existing chat is open, your choice changes that chat only.

4. Send your first message#

  1. Open the Chat window.
  2. Type in the box at the bottom (“Type a message...”).
  3. Press Enter or the send button.

Try something small first, like: “Look at the scripts in ServerScriptService and tell me what they do.”

While Shard works, you see a “Thinking” status and a row for each action it takes (for example “Read 2 scripts”). Click a row to see the details. When it finishes, it shows how long it worked.

5. Change the look#

Open Settings → Appearance → Themes. There are six themes: Classic (the default), Neon, Slate, Wood, Classic Light and Sandstone.
