Docs / Using Shard
Skills
A skill is a built-in, step-by-step workflow for one kind of Roblox work, with links to the official docs. When a skill is active, Shard follows its steps and checks for that task.
Skills only guide Shard. Loading one never changes your place by itself.
The built-in skills#
| Command | Also works as | Name | What it’s for |
|---|---|---|---|
/animation | /anim | Roblox animation | Set up animation tracks with the right rig, ownership, and lifecycle. |
/client-server | /networking, /replication | Roblox client/server | Design secure remotes, authority, and replicated game state. |
/datastore | /persistence, /data-store | Roblox data stores | Plan persistent data with safe schemas, retries, and server ownership. |
/debug | /diagnose | Debug Roblox code | Reproduce a failure, trace its cause, and make a focused correction. |
/gameplay | /feature, /interaction | Roblox gameplay | Plan, implement, and check a gameplay feature across its lifecycle. |
/optimize | /performance | Optimize Roblox code | Find measured bottlenecks and improve performance without guesswork. |
/physics | /movement, /bouncepad | Roblox physics | Build reliable physical interactions, impulses, and movers. |
/plugin | /studio-plugin | Roblox Studio plugin | Build or debug a Studio plugin using the project’s existing APIs and patterns. |
/refactor | /clean-up | Refactor Luau | Improve structure while preserving the current behavior and contracts. |
/ui | /interface | Roblox UI | Design and improve Roblox interfaces that fit the existing experience. |
There is also /compact, which isn’t a skill: it shortens the chat’s context. See Chatting.
Using a skill#
Pick from the list#
- Type
/in the message box. The Built-in skills list opens. - Keep typing to filter it (it matches commands, names, descriptions and the other names).
- Use Up and Down to move, and Tab or Enter to pick. Or click a row. Esc closes the list.
- A tag like “/gameplay · Roblox gameplay” appears above the message box. Type your request and send it.
To remove the tag, click its ×, or press Esc in an empty message box.
Or type it in one go#
/gameplay Add an interact prompt that opens this door for everyone and closes it after five seconds.
If you send just the command with nothing after it, Shard asks you to “Describe what you want this skill to do...”.
A skill applies to the message you send it with. Your message shows the skill and its version, for example “/gameplay (v1.0.0)”. For the next message, pick it again if you still want it.
Shard picks skills on its own too#
You don’t have to type a command. For bigger physics, gameplay, UI, animation, client/server, debugging, data store or plugin work, Shard loads the matching skill itself with its LoadSkill tool. You see this as a row in the chat. Typing the command yourself just makes sure it’s used.
Errors#
- “Unknown skill command '/xyz’. Type / to browse built-in skills.” means there’s no skill with that name. Check the table above.
- “Skills failed to load: ...” means a built-in skill file is broken. Please tell us from Settings → Support.
